In the past, Apple has had some other iPhone model that doubled, but not precisely the way we would like them to bend.
Citing various industry sources, The Investor says that LG has recently created a working group focused on developing a future foldable screen with OLED technology for the iPhone. LG Innotek, LG’s other company, is also working on creating a flexible printed circuit board.
The mass production of flexible OLED panels could begin in 2020, which means that a supposedly collapsible iPhone could come in three or four years. LG apparently has its own prototype OLED folding panel for 2 or 3 years and since then it has been improving durability and performance index.
Curiously, Apple is not the only one who wants to make a mass-folding phone. Samsung’s mobile business president said recently that they are working on creating one for the next few years, but there are still a couple of security issues to solve.
It is difficult to know if the future of smartphones happens to be flexible, there are still issues to solve like that of batteries. Be that as it may, a very interesting year awaits us.
